Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Process and Equipment

Lithium battery recycling involves several stages, from collection and safe discharge to mechanical processing and material separation. The main objective is to recover valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, aluminum, and black mass.

The process begins with sorting and pretreatment. Spent batteries are classified by chemistry, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC), and safely discharged before mechanical processing. The batteries are then shredded under controlled conditions to reduce their size and prepare the material for separation. After shredding, screening and physical separation are used to separate battery casings, plastics, copper, aluminum, and other fractions from the fine electrode material. The resulting black mass is a powder containing valuable battery materials from the electrodes. Further refining can be added when the project requires the recovery of specific products such as lithium carbonate, nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, manganese sulfate, or iron phosphate.

The required equipment depends mainly on the battery chemistry, feedstock, processing capacity, and target products. LFP and NMC batteries require different downstream recovery processes, so a recycling line should be configured around the actual material and recovery requirements rather than using a fixed standard layout.
