Aluminum Conductor Steel-Reinforced (ACSR) cables require specialized recycling equipment due to their composite structure, which features conductive aluminum strands wrapped around a high-strength steel core. Unlike conventional cables that can be processed using standard stripping or granulation systems, ACSR scrap demands a specialized process engineered to effectively separate two mechanically intertwined metals for high-purity recovery.

A typical ACSR cable recycling line begins with a pre-crusher or industrial shredder that reduces long transmission cables into manageable segments. This primary reduction liberates the outer aluminum strands from the inner steel core, preparing the material for downstream sorting. Achieving a consistent particle size (10–50 mm) and clean physical separation during this stage is critical, as downstream efficiency depends entirely on whether the two metals have been fully liberated from one another.

Following the shredding stage, high-intensity magnetic separation isolates the ferrous steel core components from the non-magnetic aluminum fraction. Depending on processing capacity and targeted purity standards, the line may incorporate secondary screening and air separation stages to further refine each stream. The recovered high-purity aluminum is then routed to secondary aluminum smelters, while the separated steel wire is channeled into standard steel recycling streams.

When selecting ACSR recycling equipment, operators must evaluate key variables including cable diameter, steel-core configuration, throughput requirements, target metal purity, and overall stage integration. Equipment purpose-built for ACSR scrap achieves significantly higher recovery rates and cleaner output streams than machinery adapted from conventional cable processing lines.
