What Is Automotive Shredder Residue and How Is It Recycled

Automotive shredder residue (ASR), also known as auto shredder residue or car fluff, is the mixed material left after end-of-life vehicles are dismantled, shredded, and separated for major metal streams. A typical ASR stream contains plastics, rubber, foam, textiles, glass, dirt, and small amounts of residual aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and other metals. Its exact composition varies with vehicle type, dismantling practices, and upstream shredding and separation processes.

ASR is produced after the main recyclable metals have been recovered from scrap vehicles. After dismantling, the vehicle body is shredded into smaller pieces, with magnetic separation used to recover most ferrous metals such as steel and iron. Additional separation recovers non-ferrous metals. The remaining mixed fraction becomes ASR and requires further treatment if additional materials are to be recovered. The overall process can be summarized as scrap vehicles → dismantling → shredding → ferrous recovery → non-ferrous recovery → ASR → further separation.

Auto shredder residue processing mainly relies on physical separation to progressively divide the mixed material. Size reduction and screening first help liberate and classify the material by particle size. Air separation can remove lightweight foam, fibers, and other fluff, while heavier fractions continue to metal recovery. Eddy current separation can recover remaining non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper. Depending on the composition and required purity, further density, optical, or sensor-based sorting can be used to separate plastics and other material fractions.

The goal of automotive shredder residue recycling is to turn a complex mixed residue into usable material streams rather than treating the entire fraction as waste. Recovered aluminum and copper can return to metal recycling, while suitable plastic fractions can be further cleaned and processed into secondary raw materials. Rubber, foam, fibers, glass, and mineral-rich fractions may require different downstream treatment or recovery routes. The most effective process therefore depends on the composition of the ASR, particle size, contamination level, and the materials targeted for recovery.
