ASR Recycling Machine: How Automotive Shredder Residue Is Processed

An ASR recycling machine is not a single machine, but a combination of processing and separation equipment used to recover materials from automotive shredder residue. ASR typically contains plastics, rubber, foam, fibers, glass, dirt, and residual metals, so different ASR recycling machines are needed to separate these materials according to their size, weight, magnetic properties, and electrical conductivity. A typical system may include shredding, screening, magnetic separation, air separation, eddy current separation, density separation, and dust collection.

The process begins with feeding and size classification. Oversized ASR can be shredded or reduced in size to help liberate materials, then conveyed to a drum or vibrating screen for particle classification. In a typical configuration, bulk material is fed through a chain plate hopper to the drum screen and separated into fractions such as <5 mm, 5–15 mm, 15–30 mm, 30–60 mm, and 60–100 mm. Accurate screening creates more uniform material streams for subsequent separation. Magnetic separation can remove remaining ferrous metals, while air separation can remove lightweight foam, fibers, and fluff from heavier fractions.

The classified material then enters further auto shredder residue processing stages for non-ferrous metal and material recovery. An eddy current separator uses electromagnetic repulsion to separate conductive metals such as aluminum and copper, with the concentric rotor configuration suited to recovering smaller particles, including those in the 5–20 mm range. Depending on the composition of the ASR and the required output quality, density separation and additional sorting can be used to further divide plastics, rubber, glass, mineral-rich material, and remaining metal particles. Optional equipment may include air separators, self-unloading magnetic separators, full-metal sorters, X-ray sorting systems, and metal color sorters.

A complete ASR recycling equipment system is therefore configured according to the feed material, processing capacity, particle size, and target recovery products rather than using the same equipment combination for every application. A typical flow is ASR feeding → shredding → screening → magnetic separation → air separation → eddy current separation → density or additional sorting → recovered material streams. Dust collection can be integrated throughout the line to control dust generated during shredding, screening, and material transfer. The final system can be designed to recover non-ferrous metals and separate usable material fractions for further recycling or processing.
