Solar Panel Recycling Process From PV Module to Recovered Materials

The solar panel recycling process converts end-of-life PV modules into separate material streams for recycling and further use. A typical process follows PV module → aluminum frame removal → junction box removal → glass separation → crushing → screening → material separation → recovered materials. The exact process varies with module construction, including glass-backsheet and double-glass panels, but the main goal is to recover valuable materials such as aluminum, glass, copper, silicon, and plastics while minimizing material loss.

The process starts with removing the components that can be separated directly from the module. The aluminum frame is mechanically removed and collected as a clean metal stream, while the junction box and cables are separated to recover copper and other electrical components. Depending on their condition, junction-box components may be reused or processed for material recovery. Removing the frame and junction box before further treatment also reduces the amount of mixed material entering the downstream recycling stages.

The remaining laminated module is then processed for glass separation, followed by controlled crushing and screening. The recovered glass can be further processed as a raw material for new glass products. The crushed material is classified by size and subjected to additional separation to recover fine silicon-containing fractions, plastics, and remaining metals. Silicon may require further purification before being used in higher-value silicon applications, while plastics from encapsulants, backsheets, and other polymer components can be sorted and processed into recycled plastic products.

The recovered materials are then directed to their respective downstream applications. Aluminum can be remelted for use in construction, automotive manufacturing, and other products; copper and other metals can be recovered for metal recycling and applications in electrical and electronic products; glass can return to glass manufacturing; silicon can be further purified for silicon-based materials; and plastics can be classified and processed into new plastic products. In this way, PV recycling is not simply about breaking down a solar panel, but about separating its major components into usable material streams that can re-enter different recycling chains.
