Automotive scrap contains a mixture of valuable metals and non-metallic materials. End-of-life vehicles (ELVs), engine housings, wheels, and other automotive parts can contain steel, aluminum, copper, rubber, plastics, and surface contaminants. Effective recycling therefore depends on more than simply crushing the scrap—it requires a process that breaks down the material and separates different fractions for further recycling.
For aluminum engine housings, wheels, and other cast automotive parts, a typical recycling process begins with crushing. A hammer metal crusher reduces the scrap size and helps separate aluminum from attached materials. The crushed material then passes through a magnetic separator to remove ferrous metals such as steel and iron. A trommel screen classifies the material by particle size, while an eddy current separator can recover non-ferrous metals, particularly aluminum. The result is a cleaner aluminum fraction that can be sent for remelting and secondary casting.

Larger materials, such as car body shells and light-gauge automotive scrap, require a different approach. Bulky scrap is typically pre-shredded before entering a secondary shredding stage. Shredding reduces the material into smaller pieces and helps separate metals from lighter residues such as plastics, rubber, fibers, and other contaminants. Magnetic separation is then used to recover ferrous metals, while additional sorting technologies can be applied to recover non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper.
The final process depends on the type and condition of the scrap, the required particle size, and the target purity of the recovered materials. A properly designed automotive scrap recycling line can transform mixed and bulky vehicle scrap into separate streams of steel, aluminum, copper, and non-metallic residues, making the recovered materials easier to transport, remelt, and reuse.
For recyclers, the key is not simply to process more scrap, but to liberate and separate more valuable materials from each tonne of feedstock. The right combination of crushing, shredding, screening, magnetic separation, and non-ferrous separation can significantly improve the usability of recovered metals while reducing the amount of material sent to disposal.
