Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) are valuable components of electronic waste because they contain significant amounts of copper and precious metals. Depending on the PCB type, one tonne of computer PCBs may contain approximately 118 g of gold, 730 g of silver, 18.5 g of palladium, 8 g of platinum, and 300 kg of copper. This makes PCB recycling an important source of secondary metals while reducing the amount of e-waste sent to disposal.
Recovering these materials requires more than simply crushing the boards. PCBs contain components, metals, fiberglass, resin, solder, and plastics, so different fractions must be separated by composition and value. The recycling process can begin with an automatic PCB component dismantling machine. This stage removes electronic components from waste circuit boards before further size reduction. Pre-dismantling reduces the amount of mixed material entering the crushing system, lowers the load on downstream equipment, and improves subsequent separation efficiency. The removed components can then be screened and sorted according to their material and value. High-value components, particularly those containing precious metals, can be directed to dedicated recovery processes instead of being unnecessarily mixed into the bulk PCB fraction.
After component removal, the remaining PCB substrate is processed through a scrap PCB recycling line. The system uses controlled crushing, grinding, and separation to liberate the metallic and non-metallic fractions. The recovered output typically consists of a metal-rich fraction containing copper and other metals, together with resin and fiberglass-based powder. Separating these fractions creates a more concentrated feedstock for subsequent metal recovery and improves the overall value of the recycled material.

For PCBs and components containing gold-plated materials, a dedicated gold deplating process can be introduced as a separate recovery route. It is designed to remove gold from gold-plated electronic components and scrap, including selected materials from mobile phone boards, CPUs, motherboards, consumer electronics, and manufacturing residues. A non-cyanide chemical process can be used to reduce the environmental and operational concerns associated with traditional cyanide-based gold recovery. Under suitable process conditions, gold recovery rates can reach up to 99%.
The recovered gold-bearing solution or material can then be further processed through refining and, where applicable, smelting to produce a higher-purity metal product. Other precious-metal-bearing materials, such as selected electronic components and anode sludge, can be treated in a dedicated precious metal refining line for the recovery of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and other valuable metals.
Rather than relying on a single machine, a comprehensive PCB recycling project combines pre-dismantling, mechanical separation, precious-metal recovery, and refining into an integrated process. This approach allows different material streams to be handled according to their value and composition, maximizing resource recovery while reducing the burden on downstream equipment. The final plant configuration should be determined by the PCB feedstock, processing capacity, target products, precious-metal content, and required recovery route. For recyclers handling mixed electronic waste, this modular approach provides greater flexibility than processing all PCB materials through the same treatment method.
