Double Shaft Shredder Processes Mixed Plastic Waste

Mixed rigid plastic waste is increasingly difficult to process efficiently because household items such as buckets, basins, baskets, bottles, containers, and lids vary widely in size and shape. A recent plastic recycling system shows how a double shaft shredder combined with magnetic separation can prepare this mixed waste for further recycling.

The system uses a Model 1200 dual-shaft shredder to reduce bulky rigid plastics to a more manageable size. With a processing capacity of approximately 2–3 tons per hour, the system is designed for mixed household plastic waste and can be configured according to material characteristics and production requirements.

The system addresses metal contamination through two stages of magnetic separation. A suspended magnetic separator installed before the shredder removes ferrous scrap from the incoming material, while a magnetic pulley after shredding captures remaining metal fragments. This combination improves the separation of metal and non-metal materials and produces a cleaner plastic stream for subsequent sorting, washing, or granulation.

The configuration can be adapted with different shredder models, conveyor systems, capacities, and magnetic separation equipment. For recyclers handling mixed rigid plastic waste, the combination of shredding and magnetic separation provides a practical way to reduce material size while removing ferrous contaminants before downstream recycling.
