Recycling automotive windshields requires more than simply crushing laminated glass. A typical windshield consists of glass layers bonded to a plastic interlayer, usually PVB. The main challenge is to break the glass into manageable pieces while separating it from the PVB without unnecessarily damaging the recovered materials.
A typical windshield recycling machine uses controlled mechanical crushing to fracture the glass layers into smaller pieces. The crushed material is then conveyed to a PVB glass separation machine, where rolling, peeling, vibration, or other mechanical separation methods help remove glass fragments from the PVB interlayer. The recovered glass can be collected as cullet, while the separated PVB is discharged for further processing.
Windshield Glass Recycling Equipment
The type of laminated glass is an important factor in the separation process. Standard automotive windshields may be relatively straightforward to process, while acoustic PVB, switchable interlayers, and other specialized laminated structures can behave differently during crushing and separation. Differences in interlayer composition, thickness, bonding strength, and laminate structure can affect both processing performance and the quality of the recovered glass and PVB. Testing representative samples can help determine whether the crushing and separation configuration is suitable for standard windshields as well as more complex laminated glass.
A complete windshield glass recycling line can combine crushing, conveying, PVB separation, screening, and optional optical sorting. Optical sorting can help remove small residual glass fragments, colored pieces, and other impurities when a cleaner output is required. For operations that already have suitable crushing equipment, a standalone PVB glass separation machine may be sufficient.
Before purchasing a windshield recycling system, recyclers and automotive glass manufacturers should consider the actual laminate structure, required throughput, glass purity, PVB recovery, and downstream material requirements. Testing the customer’s own windshield samples is often the most reliable way to determine the appropriate equipment configuration.
