How Are Aluminum Frames Removed From Solar Panels

Solar panels commonly use aluminum frames to protect the module edges and provide structural support during installation and operation. When retired, damaged, or downgraded PV modules enter the recycling process, removing the frame is usually one of the first dismantling steps. Separating the aluminum allows it to be recovered as a valuable metal stream while making the remaining module easier to process. Depending on the recycling setup and panel design, the junction box may be removed first so external components do not interfere with frame removal. The panel is then placed flat on a frame removal machine, where it is securely positioned for mechanical separation.

How Is the Aluminum Frame Removed at Low Cost

Once the frame is released, the aluminum sections can be collected separately for recycling. The frameless module remains intact and can move to subsequent recycling stages. This creates a clearer material flow: the aluminum is directed into a metal recycling stream, while the remaining panel is prepared for further component and material separation. For this reason, frame removal equipment should be selected according to the panel type, maximum module dimensions, and required processing capacity.

Mechanical frame removal is therefore not simply a way to recover aluminum. It is an important preparation step in PV module recycling, helping separate materials at an early stage and making subsequent processing more efficient. For a specific application, equipment selection should be based on the module design, dimensions, throughput, and overall recycling process.
