Automotive windshield recycling equipment recovers valuable materials from laminated automotive glass by separating the glass from its polymer interlayer. Modern vehicle front windshields are made from laminated safety glass, typically consisting of two curved glass sheets bonded with a transparent plastic interlayer, most commonly polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This structure keeps the glass together when damaged rather than allowing it to shatter into dangerous fragments.
A typical windshield recycling system uses pre-pressing, crushing, and mechanical separation to release the glass from the interlayer. Pre-pressing cracks and flattens the laminated glass, reducing internal stress and preparing it for size reduction. The material is then crushed into smaller pieces, typically below 20 mm, helping separate the rigid glass from the flexible polymer film. Mechanical rollers or dedicated detachment units complete the separation by removing loose glass particles from the interlayer. This physical process yields high-purity glass particles (over 99% separation efficiency) and reusable polymer films. The recovered materials can be processed into separate, reusable streams. Glass cullet can be supplied to glass manufacturers or used in suitable construction applications, while the recovered PVB interlayer can be further processed for applications such as industrial plastics, adhesives, or film production.

Although PVB is the most common interlayer in automotive and architectural laminated glass, other materials are also used. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) offers strong moisture resistance and is commonly used where humidity resistance is important, while SGP (ionoplast) provides higher stiffness and strength for demanding structural glazing applications. The laminated glass separator windshield recycling machine can be configured to process waste car windshields and different types of PVB, EVA, and SGP laminated glass, depending on the material composition and required separation quality. By recovering both glass and polymer instead of treating laminated windshields as mixed waste, the recycling process turns difficult-to-handle automotive glass into reusable material streams and supports more efficient resource recovery.
