As wind energy continues to grow worldwide, more wind turbine blades are reaching the end of their service life. Recycling these blades is challenging because they are made from fiber-reinforced composite materials that combine strong fibers, thermoset resins, and lightweight core materials. A typical wind turbine blade contains approximately 60–65% reinforcing fibers (mainly fiberglass, with carbon fiber used in some large blades), 30–35% resin matrix, and 4–5% core materials such as balsa wood or PVC foam. While this structure provides excellent strength and durability during operation, it also makes traditional disposal methods unsuitable.
Mechanical recycling offers a practical solution for processing waste wind turbine blades through size reduction and physical separation technologies. Before recycling, large blades are cut into smaller sections for transportation and feeding. The material then passes through a multi-stage crushing process, starting with a heavy-duty twin-shaft shredder for initial breakdown, followed by hammer crushers to further reduce particle size and release embedded materials.

After crushing, the mixed material is separated through screening and sorting systems. Different components, including fiberglass fractions, resin-rich materials, and lightweight core materials such as balsa wood, are classified according to their physical properties. The recovered materials can include long-fiber bundles, short-fiber bundles, and core materials, with the separated output purity reaching approximately 95%, depending on the blade composition and processing conditions.
A complete wind turbine blade recycling system integrates shredding, crushing, screening, air separation, and dust collection technologies to improve recovery efficiency and maintain stable operation. Compared with more complex chemical recycling methods, mechanical processing offers a simpler process route, lower energy requirements, and better suitability for large-scale industrial applications.
