Why Do Traditional Single-Glass PV Modules Have Higher Recycling Value The recycling value of photovoltaic modules mainly comes from their material composition. A typical single-glass PV module consists of tempered glass, solar cells, EVA encapsulation film, polymer backsheet, aluminum frame, and junction box. Compared with newer PV module designs, early-generation standard solar panels usually have a simpler and more stable structure, making material separation and recovery more practical and cost-effective. A traditional single-glass PV module typically weighs around 20–30 kg per panel, with an average weight of about 25 kg. Its material composition is mainly made up of: ★ Glass: 70–75% ★ Aluminum frame: 8–12% ★ EVA and backsheet materials: 10–15% ★ Silicon and metals(copper): 3–5% The glass layer represents the largest portion of the module weight, while aluminum, silicon, and copper provide additional economic value. The aluminum frame can be directly recovered and reused as a valuable metal resource, while silicon wafers and metal components inside the solar cells can be further processed for material recovery. As millions of retired single-glass PV modules enter the recycling market, they represent a significant source of reusable materials and create new opportunities for the growth of the solar recycling industry.
