Mechanical PV Recycling Equipment for Damaged Solar Panels

Damaged solar panels do not necessarily need to be excluded from recycling. Purely physical and mechanical recycling systems can process cracked, broken, and end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) modules. The key is to determine how much pre-treatment is needed and whether the goal is to process the entire module or recover materials from the remaining laminate.

The first challenge is handling damaged modules. Operators typically remove aluminum frames, junction boxes, and cables before the main recycling process. When glass is shattered or frames are deformed, automated handling can become more difficult. Depending on the condition of the incoming material, specialized feeding equipment or semi-manual loading may be necessary.

After pre-treatment, the remaining laminate can be crushed or shredded to break down the bonded layers of glass, EVA encapsulant, silicon cells, and metal ribbons. Separation equipment then sorts the resulting material into different fractions. However, reducing a panel to smaller particles is not the same as achieving high-purity recovery. Crushing and separation must be configured according to the material composition and the quality requirements for the recovered outputs.

Some recycling applications focus specifically on the residual backsheet rather than the complete panel. For panels with broken glass and surface deformation of no more than 3%, operators first remove the junction boxes, aluminum frames, and glass. The remaining backsheet material is then crushed and separated to recover metal and plastic powders. Ultimately, mechanical recycling is a practical option for damaged PV panels, but there is no single processing route for every type of waste module. Evaluating panel condition, defining the target materials, and selecting the appropriate crushing and separation stages are essential to achieving an effective recycling process.
