How Solar Panel Recycling Recovers Copper, Silicon and Glass from PV Waste

A new photovoltaic recycling line in South Korea has successfully demonstrated that end-of-life solar panels can be treated as a valuable industrial resource. As global solar waste grows, the International Renewable Energy Agency estimates discarded modules could generate 78 million tonnes of waste worldwide by 2050, with recoverable materials valued over US$15 billion if fully returned to industrial supply chains.

Why Solar Panel Recycling Is Becoming a Commercial Priority
For years, most solar recycling efforts have focused primarily on removing aluminum frames and recovering bulk glass. However, rising volumes of decommissioned modules—and higher raw material prices—are prompting recyclers to pursue deeper recovery. A photovoltaic panel contains multiple bonded materials: an aluminum frame, tempered glass, copper conductors, silicon cell material, and trace amounts of silver. Because these layers are laminated under heat and pressure, direct crushing often reduces material value by mixing fractions together. That is why modern systems increasingly use staged separation rather than single-step shredding.

Korean Solar Panel Recycling Line Uses Sequential Recovery Instead of Bulk Crushing
At the Korean site, the recycling process follows a specific sequence. It starts with the removal of the frame and junction box, making it possible to recover aluminum and copper-bearing components before any size reduction occurs. Next, the module moves into a stripping-type unit where the front glass is separated. After the glass removal, the module undergoes a series of steps: strip cutting, single-shaft shredding, fine grinding, and airflow sorting. This sequential approach allows metallic particles to be separated earlier in the process, which reduces contamination in downstream fractions. Finally, the material passes through a three-layer vibrating screen, where plastics and silicon powder are separated according to particle size and density.

PV Recycling Is Shifting from Pilot Projects to Industrial Deployment
As first-generation solar installations begin retiring across Asia, Europe, and North America, photovoltaic recycling is moving beyond demonstration projects into full industrial deployment. For recyclers, the business case is increasingly straightforward: solar panels are no longer viewed only as difficult laminated waste, but as a concentrated source of aluminum, copper, silicon, and precious metals—provided separation technology is precise enough to recover each fraction economically. With global solar installations still expanding, the ability to process future PV waste streams efficiently is quickly becoming part of long-term recycling infrastructure rather than a niche specialty.
